Can You Crack It? The Overlooked Dutch Creation That Shaped the Modern Globe

There are many candidates for the designation as “world’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.

As per a recent publication, though, that title belongs to the automated sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.

“Prior to mechanised sawing, building a simple merchant vessel necessitated around 10 lumberjacks working over 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven sawmills, the same quantity of processed timber could be manufactured within seven days.”

Owing to their rapid automated cutter, that converted timber into boards using virtually no human effort, the Dutch were able to construct vessels more quickly compared to anyone else, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, financial as well as artistic supremacy across the continent and the world.

The Original True Industrial Machine

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues the writer, was “mankind’s first true factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a wheel. One component converted its rotary movement into up-and-down action for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism transformed that same spinning movement into a lateral movement advancing the log to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood forward one precise increment per cycle.

“Every component was modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to combine them so the machine operated in a precisely synchronized order, cutting with each downward motion while moving on every upward motion. This constituted a remarkably intelligent application of fundamental components.”
