“It was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
