Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
