Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and years of training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the tide of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
