The Princess of Wales's Annual Christmas Musical Celebration Honours Unsung Heroes

The Princess of Wales is hosting her annual Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.

The large audience will listen to a selection of carols, music and readings from actors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Focusing on Compassion and Love

The central message of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Attending the event are a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a child with a terminal illness.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the concert.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own steady comeback to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Pembrokeshire, has been supported by the charity, with grants helping towards musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at the concert.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," she stated. She is now a student at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.

A Sisterly Duo

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.

Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.

That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, honouree of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for food banks.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Taking to the stage will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "a dream come true."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
